New Day
Lionkit Darkness pressed against him, it enveloped him like the gentle curve of his mother’s tail, choking him in its hold. Lionkit struggled purposefully against the pressure, kicking out with his back legs, whimpering slightly as a familiar tingle of pain shot down his back limb.
The smell of moss tinged the air, tickling at his nose. He inhaled the comforting scent deeply and snuggled a little deeper into the soft wall of fur beside him. His frantic thrashing calmed.
When he forced his eyelids to open, it was the same figure beside him, they called her his mother, but Lionkit remembered her being different once, her fur a bright orange, a colour like nothing he’d ever seen before in the den.
The young kit let out a pitiful yowling sound, hoping to gain somebody’s attention, he was hungry. Word Count (titles and OOC text not included): 138

Hazeltwist had been dreaming when the sound of her adopted kit, Lionkit, wailed. "Oh, are you hungry?"she asked the tiny tom, licking the top of his head. "Its okay, I'm here.."she whispered, trying to calm him down. The brown tabby queen nudged him closer to her, hoping to make him nurse.

Satisfied that his needs had been answered Lionkit nuzzled his head into the she-cat’s side. No longer sleepy he tilted his head to the side, wondering what he could do in the small confines of the den.
Having finally decided, he pulled himself up onto slightly unsteady paws, it was slow going at first, his legs tangled in the moss of the nest beneath him but eventually, when the swaying had subsided, he found himself stood upright. His tail stuck out behind him, in an attempt to retain his precarious balance.
Shifting his body slightly he readied himself to pounce, his front half going down until his chin was level with the floor. The orange tabby made a quick hop forwards, the landing rather unsuccessful, and allowed himself to be content with his prize. The soft tip of his mother’s tail.
“Will I be big enough to leave the den soon?” He wondered curiously, the young kit was excited about the world outside the den, other kits would come inside, clinging to their pelts were scents he’d never smelt before. Some sweet, some intoxicating and some which were rather repulsive. He couldn’t wait to learn what each scent belonged to, and he most definitely wanted to be the one bringing those new scents into the den. Word Count: 216

Seedykit stirred, struggling to hold onto the escaping warmth of her sweet dream before giving in to the blaring sunlight that indicated the beginning of a new day. Grunting, she shifted away from the intrusive light in an effort to fall back into the comfortable surreal dream. In her sleep she was a swift and powerful hunter, stalking bountiful prey and hunting them down with ease. Everyone was very impressed with her efforts and for once, she was receiving recognition for her efforts. But despite her best efforts at shutting out the sunlight, there was still another factor that prevented her from attaining her prevailing hunting skills once again and she released a disdainful hiss at Lionkit's continuous mewling and scuffling amongst the moss.
'Can't you keep quiet for at least a little while?' she squeaked, raising her head to glare at the larger tabby kit. 'Some of us are trying to sleep here! Honestly-' her protesting became more muffled as she struggled into a sitting position before clambering over to the younger kit.
'Aren't you bored being stuck in the den all day?' She kept her voice down but all traces of her earlier tiredness were suddenly wiped away as an idea began to formulate in her mind. She could be a great hunter! She could be recognised as being useful!

Lionkit craned his neck to peer over at the she-cat who had disturbed his fun. The ginger tabby let out a short unsubtle hiss with his fur standing on end. “What would you know?” He asked somewhat haughtily, the young kit was upset by the sudden confrontation with the ebony furred she-cat. Lionkit wasn’t overly keen on creating hostility and hated offending people but he didn’t react very well to other people acting aggressively, with a tendency to take a defensive stance.
It struck him quite suddenly. His body relaxed and he snuggled down into the moss, his eyes and ears peeking out from above his mother’s tail, his head resting on his slightly overlarge paws. “Have you ever been outside?” He asked in a hushed whisper, lowering his voice in the hopes that his mother wouldn’t hear. Excitement flourished through his body, like wild flowers in green leaf, and he trembled with barely contained anticipation, eagerly awaiting the answer.
If it was ‘yes’ what would he do? Even if it was ‘no’ there was no denying that both young kits seemed overly eager to venture forth into the world. All they would have to do was wait until sundown, until the older she-cats were sleeping with their kits nestled in their nest. He shivered with excitement, feeling his eyes brighten at the thought of finally being able to do something worthwhile for the clan. “Once.†He replied, struggling to keep his voice low enough to avoid detection. He could see Littleleaf staring intently at them from the other side of the den.
“What are you two planning now?†she mewed, amusement sparkling in her eyes as she wrapped her tail neatly around her paws. She loved Seedykit dearly but also knew how her son had a tendency to be devious and get himself into tricky situations.
“Nothing, I swear!†Squeaked Seedykit in alarm as he started at the sudden intrusion into his conversation. “We were just talking about how exciting it’ll be when we finally become apprentices!†He gave her his best wide-eyed look in an attempt to prove his innocence.
“Very well…†she replied, knowing that she would have to pay extra attention to Seedykit if she was going to foil his latest plan.
~~~
Seedykit stirred, being careful to not rustle the leaves too much in fear of waking the adults. He nudged Loinkit with his nose. “Wake up!†he hissed, “we don’t have much time!†This was it, they’d be embarking on a great adventure and bringing back all of the prey in the forest! If they were successful, then maybe they’d get to become apprentices early! Everyone would be so impressed.
Lionkit let out a frustrated mewl, he didn’t much like having his sleep interrupted but when his heavy eyelids finally forced their way open, excitement overtook him and he rose to his feet with the same unsteadiness that had plagued him since he’d taken his first steps.
He navigated the moss with expertise, or rather, he stomped noisily through the moss with as much stealth as a badger, but he tried. The young kit bounded forwards with extreme care and attention, although his tail gladly knocked aside precisely stacked piles of moss.
The ginger tabby nudged the she-cat with his head, flicking his tail in the direction of the exit. “Are you ready, Seedypaw?” He murmured in a hushed voice, purposefully naming the she-cat as an apprentice. Lionkit batted her ear with his overlarge paw playfully. “Let’s go!” Word Count: 138
Waterclaw walked into the nursery seeing Hazeltwist, Lionkit and Seedykit. "Hello Hazeltwist, how are you and Lionkit doing? Seedykit? How about you? Are you all having a good day?" she asked patiently. She watched the kits fight and smiled, as any deputy would seeing the kits in the clan growing up so quickly. "Lionkit, you have a better chance because you are larger, use that! Seedykit, you may be small but because your small your faster! Use that!" Waterclaw said to the kits giving them advice.
Lionkit eyed the large warrior with a careful gaze, he’d heard other cats discuss the formidable deputy and her kittypet heritage, Lionkit wasn’t exactly sure what a kittypet was but from the scathing comments he had heard whispered on occasion, he was sure it wasn’t anything good. The young kit had also heard mention, from other kits, that Waterclaw had a blind eye, they said that if you looked into it NightClan would claim your soul!
The orange-furred kit gulped nervously and lifted his chin a little higher, hoping to seem more confident. “We weren’t fighting.” He hurriedly explained in a soft mewling voice, which was a pitch higher than normal. “We were just playing.” The kit yelped purposefully, although he couldn’t help but puff his chest out a little bit at being told he had the advantage over Seedykit.
Lionkit didn’t like fighting, for some reason the harried yowls of pain and clumps of fur scattered around camp brought up strange memories he didn’t care to remember, he suspected they were linked to the she-cat before Hazeltwist, the one with orange fur. Word Count: 183
Seedykit jumped with a startled squeak when the deputy announced her presence. Her dark fur stood up on end and her eyes widened like large pools of fire. How much had Waterclaw heard? Was she suspicious of their actions? After all, it was quite dark and nearly everyone else was already curled up in their nests.
"We were just going to sleep, honestly!" she protested, digging her claws into the soft moss and trying her utmost to look completely innocent. At the same time, she was trying to hold back her annoyance at being told she didn’t have much of a chance in winning a fight against Lionkit. One day, I’ll be strong enough to beat him! I’ll show them… I’ll show them all! she thought huffily, yearning for the day when she could begin her training and learn to fight.
She continued to knead the moss, lowering her body and beginning to shuffle herself into a comfortable position in an attempt to feign getting ready to sleep. She gave Loinkit a meaningful glance in the hope that he’d get the same idea and would try to fool the deputy.
The young kit observed the she-cat carefully for a few moments, just what is she doing exactly? It was like the process of building a nest, first there was moss, too sleep on, followed by brambles to protect those inside, a slow process that seemed odd when separated but made complete sense when everything slotted into place.
“Yeah, I’m really tired!” Lionkit mewed, in his familiar high-pitched tone, his tail flicked excitedly. Now that he thought about it, he was feeling tired, his muscles had begun to ache, he’d played in the den enthusiastically during the day and now he felt worn out and his eyes were drooping. It was quite late, already passed sundown, and usually the orange-furred kit was asleep by then.
He did a quick circle in his nest, before neatly folding his paws beneath his body, leaning heavily into his mother’s side and burying his face into her fur, until darkness overwhelmed his vision. “Good night, may NightClan watch over you, Seedykit, Waterclaw, mother.” A quick nap before their adventure wouldn’t hurt anybody. Seedykit let out a soft sigh when she realised that Lionkit had caught on to her idea. She closed her eyes and calmly nuzzled the ground, feeling confident that Waterclaw would fall for their cleverly devised plan.
Sure enough, the she-cat dipped her head and spoke her farewells before turning and padding away from the nursery. Seedykit opened her eyes and trained them on the entrance, using all of her senses to try and determine if anyone else was still stalking around.
"Loinkit!" She squeaked when she was sure that the coast was clear, scrambling unsteadily to her paws and kicking up moss in her haste. She glanced down at the unresponsive younger kit only to see that his eyes were tightly screwed shut. Was he really already trying to fall asleep? "Lionkit!" She repeated, lowering her head and nudging his shoulder. "Wake up! This is no time to be resting! We have prey to catch!" She nudged him again before clambering over to the entrance of the nursery. The cool breeze of the night air felt refreshing and rejuvenating to the young kit. She was ready for anything!
Lionkit opened his heavy eyelids slowly, letting out a perturbed yowl, he gifted the she-cat with a short hiss, his fur rising on ends slightly. Eventually, the young kit struggled onto his feet, the excitement of the approaching adventure overwhelmed him once more and a giddy feeling planted seeds in his stomach.
“Let’s go!” He crowed to Seedykit, with purposeful strides he clambered over the moss that made up his nest.
Before them lay there next obstacle, the distance between the two kit’s nests and the entrance to the nursery was quite considerable, especially when you had unsteady little legs. Lionkit puffed out his chest and lifted his chin, trying to appear the epitome of brave and he took off at a quick walk.
He couldn’t move any faster than a walk, mainly because he hadn’t learnt how to yet and was still unsteady at this slow pace but he also knew that anything faster might aggravate his poor leg.
The entrance to the den was in sight and the orange-furred tom looked over his shoulder to make sure Seedykit was following. “Hurry, Seedykit, before sunrise.”
